Trans-Himalayan Sky Adventure
(Conquer Ladakh, Zanskar & the World’s Highest Roads)
The Trans-Himalayan Motorcycle Expedition: Ladakh & Zanskar Valley is a 14-day extreme high-altitude motorcycle adventure of Himalayas is designed exclusively for experienced riders seeking raw terrain, isolation, and uncompromising Himalayan challenges. This is not a casual sightseeing ride; it is a true expedition that demands physical endurance, advanced riding skills, and strong mental resilience while navigating some of the most remote and least-traveled routes in the Indian Himalayas.
In this Royal Enfield motorcycle holiday to India we start riding motorbike from Manali, ascending quickly into the dramatic landscapes of Lahaul, where barren mountains, river valleys, and thin air signal the start of serious high-altitude riding. From here, the route plunges deep into the wild heart of Zanskar Valley, one of the last true frontiers of Himalayan motorcycling, known for its isolation, rugged tracks, and untouched terrain.
Riding the Royal Enfield Himalayan Bike, this expedition goes far beyond smooth highways. Riders tackle broken mountain roads, loose gravel, glacial streams, slush sections, and demanding river crossings. As altitude increases and oxygen levels drop, every riding day becomes a test of control and stamina. Long hours in unpredictable mountain weather and harsh terrain define this tour, delivering a deep sense of accomplishment that only true expedition-style motorcycling can provide.
One of the defining aspects of this Trans-Himalayan motorcycle tour is the rare combination of legendary and ultra-remote high-altitude passes. Deep inside Zanskar, riders conquer Sirsir La and Singe La, both raw, technical, and rarely ridden routes that epitomize serious off-road Himalayan riding. These are followed by iconic giants such as Khardung La, before reaching the ultimate milestone—Umling La, the highest motorable road on Earth. Crossing all four passes within a single expedition places this journey among the most demanding and prestigious motorcycle adventures in the world.
As the route opens into Ladakh, riders are rewarded with spectacular and ever-changing landscapes. Vast cold deserts, sweeping high-altitude plateaus, the surreal blue waters of Pangong Lake, the sand dunes of Nubra Valley, and unforgettable night skies near Hanle create an experience that is both visually and emotionally powerful. Ancient monasteries, remote Himalayan villages, and the historic Silk Route town of Leh add cultural depth and context to the physical challenge of the ride.
This Manali-to-Ladakh motorcycle expedition via Lahaul and Zanskar is fully supported to ensure safety and operational excellence in extreme conditions. The tour includes experienced expedition road captains, professional mechanics, backup vehicles, oxygen cylinders, medical support, planned acclimatization days, and complete permit and logistics management, allowing riders to focus entirely on the ride.
Designed strictly for riders seeking serious off-road riding, extreme altitude exposure, and authentic expedition credentials, this tour ensures that every kilometer is earned and every obstacle conquered. It is not just a motorcycle tour, but it is a once-in-a-lifetime Trans-Himalayan motorcycle expedition.

After breakfast, it’s time to meet your trusted machine — the Royal Enfield Himalayan motorcycle & your dedicated team, including the road captain, mechanic, and support vehicle driver. Following a short orientation and safety briefing, your adventure kicks off as your ride begins with a breathtaking journey through the world-famous Atal Tunnel, opening into the rugged and dramatic landscapes of Lahaul. From forested slopes to brown craggy mountains, the scenery transforms rapidly as you ride along the Bhaga River to reach the peaceful village of Jispa, chosen for ideal acclimatization. Overnight stay in Jispa.
Today unfolds as one of the most adventurous and defining riding days of the expedition—marking your transition from the green, high-altitude valleys of Lahaul into the stark, remote wilderness of Zanskar. The ride begins early from Jispa, following rugged mountain roads that soon dissolve into demanding off-road tracks. Expect loose gravel, steep climbs, rocky descents, and multiple water crossings as the terrain grows raw and unforgiving.
As altitude builds, you climb toward Shinku La Pass (5,060 m)—a dramatic high Himalayan crossing that acts as the gateway to Zanskar Valley. From the top, you’re rewarded with sweeping views of snow-laden peaks and vast, untouched landscapes that feel truly otherworldly.
Descending from the pass, the route brings you to Gonbo Rangjon, a striking sacred monolith rising abruptly from the valley floor. Revered by the local Zanskari people, this spiritual landmark offers a perfect pause for reflection and photography amid the silence of the mountains. Beyond Gonbo Rangjon, the trail opens into wide, desolate valleys—pure Himalayan wilderness with no signs of civilization, delivering a profound sense of isolation and exploration. The final stretch carries you deep into Zanskar Valley, before leading to Padum, the cultural and administrative heart of the region. By late afternoon, you arrive in Padum and check into your hotel for a well-earned rest, closing an intense, exhilarating, and unforgettable day of high-altitude expedition riding.
Today is a well-earned break from long-distance riding, giving you the opportunity to explore the spiritual and cultural richness of the Zanskar Valley. After breakfast, you’ll ride a short distance to visit Karsha Monastery, the largest and most influential monastic institution in Zanskar. Perched dramatically on a hillside overlooking the valley, Karsha offers not only deep spiritual insight into Tibetan Buddhism but also panoramic views of the surrounding glacial peaks and rivers. You can witness prayer rituals, spin ancient prayer wheels, and interact with the resident monks. Later, continue to Bardan Gompa, a striking 17th-century monastery located on a rocky outcrop above the Tsarap River. Belonging to the Dugpa-Kagyud sect, the monastery resembles a fortress and features large prayer halls and intricate woodwork. The day is not just about architecture—it’s about immersion. Take time to walk through local Zanskari villages like Pipiting, interact with warm-hearted locals, observe traditional lifestyles that have remained unchanged for centuries, and perhaps even join a short hike across barley fields or a visit to Zangla Palace, the former royal residence of the valley. The peaceful ambiance, the deep Buddhist spirituality, and the breathtaking natural backdrop make this a uniquely enriching day. Return to your guesthouse in Padum for a quiet evening, savoring the rare tranquility that only such remote regions can offer.
Today’s ride is one of the most intense and rewarding stages of the expedition, taking you deep into the remote heart of the Himalayas as you journey from Padum in the rugged Zanskar Valley to the serene village of Hemis Shukpachan in Sham Valley. The day begins early, riding through stark, dramatic landscapes dotted with poplar trees and high-altitude shrubs as the terrain steadily becomes more demanding. Soon, the route transforms into a true off-road challenge, featuring loose gravel tracks, steep climbs, narrow mountain trails, and occasional stream crossings. You will cross two of Ladakh’s least-travelled and most remote high passes—Sirsir La (4,800 m) and Singe La (4,900 m). Sirsir La tests your riding skills with steep gradients and deep gorges, while Singe La, aptly known as the “Lion’s Pass,” rewards you with sweeping panoramic views of untouched Himalayan wilderness. This entire stretch passes through one of the most isolated motorable regions of the Himalayas, with no settlements and no mobile network, offering complete silence and a raw sense of exploration. After conquering the high passes, the trail gradually descends into greener valleys, where apricot orchards and small hamlets announce your arrival in Hemis Shukpachan. By late afternoon, you reach this peaceful village, check in to your comfortable hotel, and relax after a long yet unforgettable day of true expedition riding.
After a relaxed breakfast in the tranquil village of Hemis Shukpachan, begin your scenic ride back to Leh, enriched with culturally and spiritually significant stops that highlight the soul of Ladakh.
Your first visit is to Likir Monastery, one of Ladakh’s oldest and most revered monasteries. Perched on a hilltop, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and a serene introduction to Ladakhi Buddhist life. The monastery is home to a towering golden Maitreya Buddha statue, overlooking the valley and surrounded by peaceful, prayer-flag-lined hills.
Continuing onward, you ride to Sangam, the dramatic confluence where the emerald waters of the Indus River merge with the muddy currents of the Zanskar River—one of Ladakh’s most iconic natural sights.
As you approach Leh, approximately 25 km before the town, stop at Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, built in 1517 in honor of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and his spiritual journey through Ladakh. Here, experience the humility and warmth of langar, a wholesome community meal served free of charge by the Indian Army—an experience that leaves a lasting sense of gratitude and reflection. By afternoon, arrive in Leh and unwind at your hotel after a culturally immersive and spiritually enriching day. Overnight: Hotel in Leh
Today is one of the most iconic milestones of the tour as you ride across Khardung La (5,482 m), one of the highest motorable passes on Earth. After tea and photographs at the summit, the ride descends into the enchanting Nubra Valley, where deserts, rivers and snow-draped mountains meet. As evening settles in, enjoy a bonfire, chilled beers, and dinner beneath a dazzling star-filled sky. Overnight stay in Nubra Valley (Glamping / Hotel).
After a leisurely breakfast, take a moment to connect with family and friends via video calls or messages—Nubra offers relatively better internet connectivity compared to other high-altitude regions.
Begin the day with a ride to Diskit Monastery, the largest and oldest monastery in Nubra Valley, dating back to the 14th century. Perched dramatically on a hilltop, it offers sweeping panoramic views of the valley and houses an impressive statue of Maitreya Buddha. The ride to Diskit is an adventure in itself, with rugged mountain trails and a charming stream crossing adding to the experience.
From Diskit, continue to Hunder, a rare landscape where desert dunes, snow-capped peaks, lush greenery, and flowing water coexist in harmony. Pass through the unique white-grey sand dunes, home to the rare double-humped Bactrian camels—once vital to traders along the ancient Silk Route. Here, enjoy a camel safari across Nubra’s distinctive grey dunes, a surreal high-altitude desert experience that contrasts sharply with the golden sands of Rajasthan’s Thar Desert.
Return to your camp or boutique hotel by evening to relax. You may also take a leisurely stroll around the campsite to soak in the tranquil surroundings. Overnight: Hotel / Glamping in Nubra Valley.
After breakfast, gear up for one of the most thrilling rides of your Himalayan journey – from Nubra Valley to the breathtaking Pangong Lake. This challenging route is a true paradise for adventure seekers, featuring rugged off-road tracks, shallow stream crossings, sandy stretches, and constantly changing mountain scenery. Every turn reveals new panoramas – from dramatic valleys to windswept highlands – making the ride both physically demanding and visually rewarding.
By late afternoon, arrive at the mesmerizing Pangong Tso (4,200 m / 13,800 ft), the world-famous high-altitude brackish lake that straddles the India–China border. Known for its surreal shades of blue and green that shift with the sunlight, the lake is framed by stark, majestic mountains and an atmosphere of profound stillness.
Check into your camp or cottage, unwind, and take a gentle stroll along the tranquil shores to fully absorb the magic of this otherworldly setting.
After breakfast, begin your ride towards the remote and picturesque Hanle Village. Your first stop is the Rezang La War Memorial, a poignant tribute to the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the 1962 Indo-China War. Pause to pay your respects before continuing along this rugged, high-altitude route.
En route, stop for lunch at the quaint village of Loma or Tsaga (depending on the day’s progress). From here, ride deeper into the Changthang region, an untouched expanse of mountains, plains, and endless skies, before arriving at Hanle — India’s first official ‘Dark Sky Reserve’, famed for its crystal-clear night skies and world-class stargazing opportunities.
On arrival, check into your local homestay and relax. In the late afternoon, and if time permits, visit the Hanle Observatory, one of the highest astronomical observatories in the world, renowned for its cutting-edge research and breathtaking night sky views. Overnight: Homestay in Hanle.
After breakfast start ride towards the ultimate destination for thrill-seekers - the highest motorable road in the world, Umling La!
The journey to Umling La is rough and adventurous. But fear not, because the stunning beauty of the Ladakh range in the backdrop will make this journey one of the most memorable experiences of your life. As you wind your way up to the summit, you'll witness breathtaking views that will leave you spellbound.
At an altitude of 19024 ft / 5,882 meters, Umling La is a mountain pass in Ladakh, India, located on the ridgeline between Koyul Lungpa and the Indus River near Demchok. It forms the source for the Umlung Stream that drains into the Indus and is a tributary of the Kiungdul River.
